The Feuerhand Baby Special 276 attached to my packA Brief Rundown |
The Feuerhand Baby Special 276 has been produced for over 100 years. A testament to it's design and robust durability. Feuerhand are a German company and the lanterns are still made there to this day. The lantern has a simple design and with a full tank of lamp oil, it can burn for roughly 20 hours.
The lantern has five main components that play a part in the operation of the lamp. These include the fuel tank, glass, burner, wick and the chimney.
The design uses each of these parts to create a long burn time and a flame that is well protected from the elements. The lantern uses a cold blast system to sustain the flame. Cold air is taken through the top of the chimney and taken down the two pipes on the side. This air then travels to the burner which provides oxygen needed for combustion. The hot air exits through the chimney. This process provides a bright warm light that has a consistent output.

How the Lantern Operates
I've been using this lantern for over a year now. I've had plenty of experience with it and how it performs in different conditions. The first thing that I will say is, I've never had the weather extinguish the flame. A true testament to the design of this lantern and it's heritage, It's no surprise why it has been manufactured for so long.
The fuel tank can be filled with a small funnel, this ensures that there is no fuel spillage. Once you have filled the lantern to the desired level, wait around 30 seconds or so so that the wick draws up the lamp oil. Then proceed to push the small arm down, raising the glass. Now you can light the wick. Once this is done, you simply raise the arm back up and the glass will drop down again, protecting the flame from the elements. At this point, you can see if the wick needs adjusting to provide more or less light. This is done by rotating the burner handle clockwise or anti-clockwise.

Durability and Toughness
The lantern is made to a high standard. I've used the lantern in a vast range of weather, from cold nights to pouring rain. Each time the lantern has provided light and never failed to do so. From a durability and toughness standpoint, this lantern is strong. I've knocked it about a fair bit and aside from the odd chip of paint on the base of the fuel tank or the odd scuff on the side, it has always worked fine. There are very few moving parts to break, the most obvious part likely to break is the glass. This is protected by a wire cage to offer some protection from knocks. new glass is available to purchase if the glass does break or crack. New burners are also available if somehow this breaks. It is far more likely the glass will break before the burner does.
